Turnip 28 - Buildings - Bogs - Laundry - Cityscape

For a few years now I have tried to knock out a large terrain project over the summer, with the intention to finish it prior to the start of school. For a variety of reasons I missed the deadlines I'd set myself... but better late than never!

The project is four buildings, a city backdrop, some bogs, and a few 3D printed items. The buildings are pretty old school- foamboard (foamcore), balsa wood, and cereal box cardboard for shingles. There are other miscellaneous items from Hirst Arts molds and 3d printed items scattered around.

The backdrop is made from foamcore and is part 3D, part illusionistically painted.

The 'Gatehouse' is a close copy of an illustration by 'Black Crab Art' for the Turnip28 game.

Bogs are simple MDF board with built up borders (latex caulk and wall filler compound). The gloss is three layers of gloss polyurethane.

The Laundry and Water Pump are from Infinite Dimensions and are 3D prints. The root ox is also printed, its from the Turnip28 Patreon.

Relic Hunter Mendicants - New Additions

I've been slowly working on some more Black Crab / Meridian Miniatures offerings. Some of the newer ones don't fit the look of the 40K relic hunting beggars I've been working on for the last couple years (they have more of a Mordheim vibe, and I'll be getting to them). I singled out a few that seemed to work in the 40K setting.  The miniature with all the paper prayers is a 'witch' from Wilhlem Miniatures that I added in. She has a new face, courtesy of Statuesque.

Excerpt from Esoteric Pilgrimage Destinations of the Gothic Sector, Volume 1, by Adept Matthias Laetorius.

Harrow'e'en on Ophatran Secundus

 

Excerpt from Esoteric Pilgrimage Destinations of the Gothic Sector, Volume 7, by Adept Matthias Laetorius. 

The attentive reader has likely deduced that the citizens of Ophatran Secundus celebrate an unusually high number of holidays, some of which can be traced to the pre-industrial era of the planet, or even to Holy Terra. One such event is Harrow’e’en, celebrated in ancient times as a harvest festival and tied to primitive ideas about the nature of spirituality. Harrow’e’en now coincides with the traditional yearly arrival of the Emperor’s Tithe Fleet, and is celebrated a day before the first voidship docks with the orbital stations above Ophatran Secundus.”

The arrival of the interstellar voidships cause many  citizens of Ophatran Secundus great concern. The local Ministorum Preachers teach that the veil between the Empyrean and reality is at its thinnest on Harrow’e’en. Hostile warp entities are said to cling to the ships and make their way to the planet surface on this day. Pious citizens  practice reciting prayers and charms in the preceding weeks to protect themselves. They must put their warding phrases into practice if they happen to meet the ‘Spirit of the Warp’ and its attending procession as they go about their daily business.”

 

 

Within each neighborhood, a particularly pious citizen dresses in a fearsome ‘Spirit of the Warp’ costume, and is accompanied by members of the Adepta Sororitas. The Sisterhood round up and test citizens who happen to be outdoors, to make sure they can recite their prayers correctly. Successful recitations are awarded a purity seal, and those who have neglected their duties are taken to be chastised and re-educated. In some districts, children that successfully recite their prayers to the Spirit’s entourage  are awarded fanciful costumes and roam the streets, seeking out citizens for the procession to round up.”

Imperial Citizenry - Alltag40k - Black Crab - Reliquary Holders - Grimdark AV

I've been working on more non-combatant Imperial citizens to populate my hive cityscape. There was an Instagram post detailing an event titled "Alltag40k" which had a work-play-pray theme. Essentially, everyday life in the 41st millennium. I was already planning on doing all of these anyway, so the event prompted me to bring them up in the queue.

 The first Relic holder uses a Strange Aeons witch as the base model. I gave her a piece from an old Bretonnian kit and greenstuff hands and chain.

The next relic enthusiast was provided a small reliquary from the Grey Knights kit with a little greenstuff for a cord. Pretty straightforward conversion here :)

The AV cart was based on a little scene from the Animatrix. The cart monitor is a Brother Vinni monk, modified slightly to give him some forward movement. I think the TV is from Pardulon, and the power source is a box from the old Rhino kit. Everything else is plasticard and greenstuff. Decals by Forgotten Chapters.

 

The full group so far- a mix of Black Crab, Brother Vinni, Anvil Industries, and Strange Aeons.

Order of the Ossuary - Relic Seekers - Black Crab Miniatures

I've added a few more members to my relic hunting mendicant group.

These four are all from the second Black Crab / Meridian Miniatures Kickstarter.

I also painted up some little bone piles to use as tokens or clues. I can't quite recall where the bones came from. I'm sure they are Anvil Industry or Wargames Exclusive. I can't recall where the bases I put them on came from either- I believe I found them in a discount bin at GenCon. They were way too high/thick to use for miniatures but they seemed okay for something like this.

End of Year Randomness - 2019 Edition

I don't have New Year Resolutions in the classic sense, but I do have an end-of-year tradition I try very hard to hold myself to: Avoid going into the new year with anything primed and waiting. As in the past I nearly made it, using Jan. 1st to finish up painting a set of 3D printed terrain for Blackstone Fortress. Other than that, I managed to knock out a variety of terrain and miniatures that have been waiting in the wings for a while.

Crashed Aquila Lander from the 4th edition (I think) Battle of Macragge set, a Cargo R.A.T. heavy hauler from Ratgard, three vehicles for the Gelida snow world project, a little cargo cart, plus a host of 40K Inquisition and fantasy figures and other random terrain. Most of these will be getting their own blog entry someday.

Cyber Cherub. I wanted to paint something cool on the scroll, and decided to do a 40K version of the Mandylion. I Googled "Emperor of Mankind" and went with the first image that came up. Original by the artist "Genzoman":

 

The Inquisition Daemonhosts are perhaps my least-favorite miniatures from the whole range (vying with the Dialogous for that dubious distinction). I don't mind them as much painted.

The statue was intended for my Warriors of Doom LPL entry but I didn't have a sensible way to fit it in the picture. It's available from Forge of Ice. The RAFM chaos warrior is a figure I owned about 30 years ago and decided to snag of eBay for nostalgia's sake.

I didn't keep a record of what I painted last year (looking back, some didn't show up on the blog) but I'm guessing around 400 miniatures! (EDIT: After a quick count it is closer to 350. Still a bit insane.)

Relic Seekers - Lead Adventure League - Round 5 - Black Crab Miniatures

This is my Round 5 entry for the LPL. The miniatures are four resin 'grimdark' scroungers from the Meridian Miniatures "Black Crab" Kickstarters, plus a winged cyber cherub from the Games Workshop Inquisition range.

Credit to Suber for the unusual blue color scheme. He posted his excellent Order of the Ossuary on the Lead Adventure Forum, along with a really cool concept for them, so I decided to follow suit. 

GW had a minor order of Sororitas called the Order of the Blue Robe that I've been wanting to do for a while, so these will tie into a larger Order Pronatus task force dedicated to securing relics.
