Turnip28 - Lord Simplesby - Chaff

Every once in a while I get the itch to create a few grimy Turnip28 miniatures. I am pretty close to having one example for each of the basic unit types.

Up for perusal is a new Toff, Lord Simplesby. He's a truly pathetic leader. Rumors amongst the troops is that he lost his legs in a valorous charge into a battery of cannon, but the truth is he amputated his own legs and stitched on root vegetables, for the sole purpose of wooing the Parsnip Empress. Naturally, this failed to win her favor and he's often tasked with particularly foolhardy missions.

 

 

 I used two haves of Wargames Factory horses, Perry hussar legs and sword arm, Saint Decent's Turnip28 conversion parts, a Wargames Factory AWI arm, and GW Bretonnian bits here and there.  Plus greenstuff!

I also completed a unit of 'Chaff', which are basically pitiful excuses for skirmishers. 

They are 3d printed, from a mixture of kits including the Turnip28 miniatures, Wargames Atlantic 'Camp Followers', and Big Mr. Tong firearms.

Turnip28 - Empress's Imperial Coach

I purchased a package of cheap (quality and expense) wedding favors in the form of coaches several years ago, and used most for my dieselpunk Liebhusaren army. I recalled that I had one or two left so I made one into a coach for the Parsnip Empress of Cist. The horses are Wargames Atlantic, obviously turniped up with some greenstuff and some 3D printed legs and fungus.

The coachman set of two (standing and sitting) is from Eureka Miniatures 'Pax Limpopo' range. I replaced his whip in both cases with a brass rod and some string, and gave the standing version a flintlock pistol. The sitting one is magnetized. Most of the junk on the back is Hirst Arts castings, with some greenstuff veggies and a few weapons from a Wargames Factory AWI kit.

Turnip28 - Empress Parsnip Guard - Fodder - Empress's Parsnip Fusiliers and Empress's Waifish Fusiliers

With some of the cavalry and the Empress done, I needed to move on to the spinless backbone of the army, the Fodder units. The base models are the excellent Wargames Atlantic Prussian Reserve with a few Perry heads for variety.

 

I started with a test paint scheme, then moved on to the painting the group.

 

The flags are made in Photoshop and printed on an inkjet printer.

 

 

A few years ago I bought some quirky and somewhat obscure miniatures from Eureka- female 1700s Age of Reason soldiers called the 'Sandras'. Some of them are on the cheesecake side, with exposed midriffs, so I covered most of those up with greenstuff. They also received some visors, root vegetables, and some slight turnipifications. Unlike most other people that make Turnip28 figures, I haven't made extensive use of grass tufts, just a little here and there.  

Too classically beautiful to find suitors in Cist, the Waifish have thrown their lot in with the Empress.

Chameleon Auxiliary - Tau Kill Team

I'd been anticipating the release of the Wargames Atlantic plastic Lizardmen, again with the intention of adding another xenos auxiliary to my Tau Kill team. I knew the kit was going to have a cool chameleon head.

As soon as I got the box I went to work modifying the arm to accept a Tau pulse rifle, with a new scope. I used a scabbard from the kit and added a new handle for a sheathed sword as well. Lastly, I sculpted a small shoulder pad so I could visually link him to the team a bit more.

I wasn't sure how I wanted to paint him, so I polled my Instagram account.

My sadistic followers voted for 3 (although I must be a masochist for listing it as an option... ).

Funny enough I don't have a Vespid or Kroot on the team, I need to rectify that.

Tau Pathfinders Additions - Wargames Atlantic Spider - Hasslefree Maxine

When I was painting the Giant Spider prototypes for Wargame Atlantic I was already envisioning adding one to my Tau 40K Kill Team. I was a big fan of the old Alien Legion comics back in the day (essentially a sci-fi Foreign Legion mishmash of aliens of all sorts) and I like the concept of Tau auxiliaries.

The base of the conversion is of course a Wargames Atlantic giant spider. The kit includes sci-fi faceplates, bionic legs, and a weapon arm. I swapped in a Tau pulse rifle and aerial, some greenstuff (I wanted him to have a second grasping claw, which the kit lacks), milliput for the cephalothorax armor, and some plasticard. 

I also dug through my backlog and pulled out Hasslefree's Maxine- who I never believed was human and has a suspiciously Tau-like gun.

The Giant Spiders kit is pretty sweet, I was really happy to get my hands on the plastics! Here's the sci-fi version I painted for Wargames Atlantic for comparison:

City Guards - 40K Gelida the Frozen Expanse

I recently finished up some city guards for Gelida. The base models for these are Wargames Atlantic 'Grognards'. I used GW weapons since I already had a bunch of extras. I also replaced the leader's mask with one from the Necromunda Goliaths kit just to make him stand out a bit more. The comms guy received a greenstuff mask.

I particularly like the bodies and heads in this set- the bearskins are super cool and I'm sure I'll use them on some other projects as well. The kit has a straight-up insane variety of head types.

Naturally, I wanted them to have a ride but all of the many tanks and walkers in my pile of shame are destined for other projects. I hopped on Thingiverse and found a couple different models I could combine to make a wheeled Repressor/Rhino looking APC.

Wargames Atlantic WW1 Germans

I recently painted some 3D printed prototypes of Wargames Atlantic's WW1 Germans, to be used for their box art. The plastic kit, 28mm Late War Germans, should be out relatively soon.

The kit will come with a nice array of weapons and heads- the sprue will be loaded with gasmasks, grenades, shovels,. and even has pickelhauben if you're not picky about the uniform and want to do early war.

 

Looks like it will be a cool set!

Wargames Atlantic Sci-Fi Greatcoat Troopers

Wargames Atlantic sent me 3D printed prototypes of their upcoming sci-fi greatcoat soldiers to paint for them. The resin printer that produced them is pretty astonishing; one is hard pressed to find evidence that they were printed! My understanding is that the plastic will have even better detail.

Based off what I have seen so far, we will see a flamer and grenade launcher as special weapons. I have read that there will be a lot of head options, so that a person can make a full box with one helmet type. I think that these will prove popular, I really like the look of the bearskin hats!

Wargames Atlantic Halflings

I had the opportunity to paint some 3D printed prototypes of two of the upcoming plastic Halflings set being produced by Wargames Atlantic.

Sprue removal and assembly of delicate 3D parts is challenging, but the print quality was super high and they are a good indicator of the quality of the upcoming set. I think people will like them.

Wargames Atlantic Greek Skeleton Warriors

A few weeks ago I was asked to paint some 28mm Greek-themed fantasy skeletons for a new company, Wargames Atlantic.

They're very well tooled, with almost zero mold line cleanup. They build quickly. A sprue has three bodies with integrated legs, and a torso/pelvis with separate legs which allow a person to build a skeleton that is running, advancing, standing, or to simply use the components for scenic purposes.

Weapon options are predominantly spears, although there is a sword, sarissa (pike), and bow, as well as four shields. The horned animal head shown above could easily be used on a body- I attached it to a spear to serve as a standard. The plastic glues very easily with styrene glue (some miniature plastics don't seem to).

 

Overall a very nice kit, with good detail and customization options. The thickness of the bones and weapons should be good for gaming purposes.
